Pherousa Green Shipping AS (PGS) and Pherousa Green Technologies AS (PGT) are joining forces with Finnish ship design and engineering firm Deltamarin. The trio’s aim is to develop a fleet of Ultramax dry bulk carriers powered by ammonia, a move that points to a new horizon in zero-emission propulsion using hydrogen innovation.
The Partnership: Synergy and Sustainability
Pherousa’s collaboration with Deltamarin highlights a significant step in the utilization of ammonia as a bulk fuel. This partnership symbolizes the maritime industry’s growing attention to alternative fuels and the decarbonization of deep-sea shipping.
PGT, linked with Metacon’s subsidiary Helbio S.A., holds a 10 percent ownership in PGT, along with a technology partnership that focuses on ammonia-to-hydrogen cracking. Concurrently, Norwegian maritime technology and service supplier, HAV Group ASA, has joined as an industrialization partner and also maintains a 10 percent ownership stake in PGT.
Innovative Technology: The Ammonia-to-Hydrogen Cracking Breakthrough
A recent breakthrough in ammonia-to-hydrogen cracking technology came with Metacon’s successful delivery of a prototype ammonia cracker to Pherousa. Utilizing Helbio’s tubular reforming reactor technology, the ammonia cracker can produce high-quality hydrogen. This is pivotal for the proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell and allows the development of compact and efficient ammonia-based propulsion systems, both for internal combustion engines (ICE) and fuel cell (FC) drive trains.
The ICE-based drive trains leverage ammonia combusted with hydrogen, while FC-based drive trains fully convert ammonia to hydrogen to generate electricity for electric motors. Both methods stand as true zero CO2 options, entirely eliminating carbon emissions.
Voices of Leadership: Commitment to a Sustainable Future
Hans Bredrup, Chairman of Pherousa Green Technologies AS, expressed enthusiasm for the ammonia-to-hydrogen cracking technology and its integration with Deltamarin’s vessel design. Bredrup accentuated the importance of this milestone in global climate change mitigation and in establishing Pherousa as a pioneer in sustainable shipping.
Christer Wikner, President & CEO of Metacon, emphasized Metacon’s role as a key technology partner and supplier for Pherousa’s mission and welcomed HAV Group ASA as a valuable collaborator.
