Fuel Cells Works, PowerUP & Berkeley Marine Center Team up on a Hydrogen Powered Sailboat

PowerUP had the opportunity to set in motion an exciting milestone in the future of emission-free boating!

It has become extremely popular to retrofit boats and swap diesel motors for electric ones. PowerUP had the vision to run these electric motors with our hydrogen fuel cells and without batteries.

Thanks to a cooperation with the Berkeley Marine Center, PowerUP had the opportunity to run the first ever test and installation of a PowerUP generator to run a sailboat with an electric motor completely emission-free.

The old Spidsgatter sailboat from the 1940’s already had a new motor from Electric Yacht and was paired with the PowerUP 1KW generator.

CEO Ivar Kruusenberg, Cree Partridge from the Berkeley Marine Center and Sean Shigley from Electric Yacht teamed up and transformed Gerda into an eco-friendly boat.

With a 7.2 liter hydrogen tank containing 2000 liters of compressed hydrogen, the team went for a leisurely boat ride, making the project a full success!

“We are excited to see our generators power a sailboat for the first time and we are eager to see hydrogen become the future of emission-free boating! Thanks to the Berkeley Marine Center for making this vision a reality!”
