Repsol Hydrogen in Spain

Energy giant Repsol, along with partners Enagás Renovable, Iqoxe, and Messer, has secured a substantial €62 million in European financing for the development of an innovative electrolyser endeavour in Tarragona, Spain.

Named T-HYNET, the ground-breaking initiative aspires to be Spain’s largest electrolyser, projected to have an initial capacity of 150 MW for renewable hydrogen production. The project forms an integral part of the European Hydrogen Backbone and the Catalan Hydrogen Valley, marking a crucial step forward in the deployment of renewable hydrogen projects across various sectors of the Spanish economy.

T-HYNET’s primary aim is the versatile application of the renewable hydrogen it generates, encompassing uses such as industrial fuel, mobility, local industry supply, and injection into the gas transport network. The project is built upon innovative technology aiming to minimize water usage during hydrogen production, aligning with the European Commission’s drive for sustainable, environmentally friendly industrial procedures.

The project’s inclusion within the European Hydrogen Backbone underlines T-HYNET’s critical role in establishing a robust, Europe-wide hydrogen transport network, facilitating the easy distribution of hydrogen for adoption and usage across multiple sectors. The European Commission applauds T-HYNET for its novel approach to hydrogen production and its potential to contribute significantly to regional decarbonisation objectives.

As a vital component of the Catalan Hydrogen Valley and the Ebro Hydrogen Corridor, T-HYNET plays a key role in shaping an all-encompassing hydrogen ecosystem. These initiatives stimulate collaboration between various stakeholders to push for the adoption of renewable hydrogen technologies. The construction of a hydrogen collector within the T-HYNET project will enable the delivery of hydrogen to the Petrochemical Pole and Ecoplant, aiding their transition towards greener energy alternatives.

T-HYNET operates under the umbrella of the SHYNE consortium, which comprises 22 companies, 11 associations, and numerous technology centres and universities. The consortium’s goal is to foster the development of renewable hydrogen projects throughout all sectors of Spain’s economy, promoting innovation and furthering the country’s sustainable development objectives. The SHYNE consortium seeks to expedite the proliferation of renewable hydrogen within Spain via collaboration and the sharing of knowledge.

The European Commission’s ‘Innovation Fund’ programme, with a total budget of €3.6 billion, has selected Repsol’s T-HYNET as one of its projects. The programme seeks to support pioneering clean technology projects across Europe. The selection of T-HYNET underscores the project’s potential to drive significant progress in renewable hydrogen production and contribute to the EU’s ambitious carbon reduction targets.
