“Hydrogen’s capacity for immediate power generation makes it an indispensable part of our future energy storage solutions,”

In a recent statement, Darren Davidson, the Vice President Siemens Energy UK&I and Siemens Gamesa UK, pointed out the country’s lag in embracing the necessary pace for an effective energy transition. Leading a workforce of 6,000, Davidson highlighted the shortfall in reaching offshore wind targets, a critical element in the UK’s renewable energy strategy.

“Employing a vast team across various energy sectors, from power transmission to hydrogen-fueled turbines, Siemens Energy is deeply entrenched in the UK’s energy ecosystem,” Davidson remarked. He stressed the urgency for Britain to spearhead innovative strategies alongside the government and its clientele to hasten the transition process, frankly stating, “We’re not moving swiftly enough.”

Davidson warned that continuing at the current pace jeopardizes the nation’s ambition to harness 50 gigawatts from offshore wind. He underscored the importance of acknowledging this gap and advocating for immediate, impactful changes.

Despite significant reductions in carbon emissions over recent decades, the UK’s journey to achieving net zero – a balance between emitted and absorbed carbon – remains extensive. The government has committed to sourcing all new grid electricity from non-carbon emitting technologies, predominantly through wind power, supplemented by nuclear and solar energy, among others.

The potential role of hydrogen as a clean energy source was also discussed, with Davidson noting Siemens Energy’s provision of gas plants adaptable to hydrogen use. “Hydrogen’s capacity for immediate power generation makes it an indispensable part of our future energy storage solutions,” he asserted, highlighting the need for rapid response energy sources.

Davidson, who has recently taken on the role of vice president for Siemens Energy UK&I and Siemens Gamesa UK after starting as an apprentice at 16, pointed out the immediate need to escalate hydrogen power projects, which are slightly trailing behind wind power initiatives, to achieve a 30-gigawatt milestone.

This call to action emphasizes the critical need for the UK to expedite its energy transition efforts, leveraging wind and emerging hydrogen technologies, to meet its ambitious renewable energy and carbon neutrality targets.
