Siemens and Verano Energy have announced a groundbreaking partnership to establish the “Los Amigos del Verano” green hydrogen production facility in Taltal, Chile. With an investment of $2.9 billion, this venture is set to redefine renewable energy.

The multi-phase project, with a cumulative capacity of 25 GW, consists of seven 2.5 GW hydrogen generation plants. By 2027, the first phase is projected to be operational. The facility will be linked to a marine storage and distribution hub via a 100 km pipeline. Desalination plants are also part of the blueprint to secure a consistent water source.

Siemens CEO, Roland Busch, highlighted the role of digital tech in the shift to green hydrogen, while Verano Energy’s leadership shared their vision for a sustainable Chilean energy sector.

Situated in the Atacama desert, the project benefits from optimal solar and wind conditions, resulting in the lowest levelized cost of ammonia globally. This venture symbolizes Verano Energy’s commitment to eco-friendly initiatives and CO2 emission reduction.

Joining Siemens in this endeavor are industry giants Albemarle and Crasma, reflecting a united front for a sustainable future.

This collaboration between Siemens and Verano Energy is a significant stride towards cleaner energy, positioning Chile as a global frontrunner in addressing climate challenges.
