Solarvest Holdings Bhd’s subsidiary, Solarvest Borneo Sdn Bhd, in partnership with the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) and Huawei Technology (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, has launched the Smart Solar PV and Green Hydrogen Testbed. This venture aims to boost the clean energy industry in Borneo, representing a significant move towards transforming the region into a key player in the hydrogen economy.
Operated and developed by Sarawakian talents trained at the CENTEXS Green Energy Lab, the Testbed boasts a total installed capacity of 425 kilowatt-peak (kWp) with 780 solar panels, making it the largest solar system ever implemented in Sarawak. It highlights the commitment to exploit the potential of solar energy in the region.
The Testbed features integration with battery storage systems, enabling operation in a hybrid mode, connected or disconnected from the grid. It can rely entirely on the on-site solar system to generate green hydrogen through electrolysis. The resulting green hydrogen can then fuel a 5G telecommunication system via a fuel cell that transforms the chemical energy of hydrogen into electricity.
Leon Liew Chee Ing, Solarvest Borneo director, underlines the Testbed’s role as a benchmark for future green hydrogen production initiatives, aligning with the Sarawak Government’s vision to position the state as a significant player in the hydrogen economy by 2027. The Testbed signifies a critical step in reaching this goal and potentially establishing Sarawak as a leader in green energy.
The Sarawak Government’s commitment to becoming a regional green energy powerhouse is articulated in the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030. The state plans to have the first large-scale green hydrogen production facility ready for export by 2027. Solarvest Borneo is wholly committed to supporting the state in achieving this vision, contributing to the region’s sustainable energy transformation. The Testbed is a testament to this commitment, displaying the largest solar system in Sarawak and offering flexible, hybrid operation through its integration with battery storage systems.
