Fuel Cells Works, Spain: Hydrogen Plant Promoted in as Pontes Will Involve €165M
  • The president of the Xunta, accompanied by the first vice president and conselleiro of Economy, Industry and Innovation, Francisco Conde, met with representatives of Reganosa and EDPR.
  • Rueda highlights that the hydrogen plant promoted in As Pontes by Reganosa and EDP Renovables will involve an investment of up to € 165 M.
  • It advances that it will be the first initiative in Galicia that the Xunta will process as a Strategic Industrial Project (PIE) to facilitate its materialization.

Santiago de Compostela — The president of the Xunta de Galicia, Alfonso Rueda, announced that the initiative of Reganosa and EDP Renovables to install a pioneering renewable hydrogen production plant in As Pontes de García Rodríguez will involve an investment of up to 165 million euros and will generate 210 jobs in construction and another 100 after its start-up, half direct and half induced.

Rueda thanked the two companies for their commitment to Galicia and our industry and advanced that it will be the first initiative of the Community that the Xunta will process as a Strategic Industrial Project (PIE), to facilitate its materialization. In addition, the plant will have an initial installed capacity of 20 Megawatts, which can be increased to 100 MW, and will be able to produce 14,400 tons of hydrogen that will avoid emissions of 150,000 tons of CO.2.

This specific figure implies several advantages, such as the priority in the processing, the halving of the deadlines of the common procedure or the streamlining of all the urban planning and planning procedures linked to the authorizations for construction, while maintaining all the guarantees from the technical, legal and environmental point of view. “A bet of this magnitude we believe must have the maximum support from the Administrations and the Xunta, of course, will give it to him,” he said.

The head of the Galician Government, together with the economic vice president of the Xunta, Francisco Conde, met with the president and the general director of Reganosa, Carlos Collantes and Emilio Bruquetas, respectively, and with the general director in Spain of EDP Renovables, Rocío Sicre, to address this initiative. They analyzed the future project that will allow the reindustrialization of the town and, with it, bring new opportunities for the environment and for the Galician industry, in the face of a disorderly energy transition that causes, for example, the upcoming closure of the As Pontes thermal power plant. In that sense, he also recalled the project that Ence has to create a Circular Economy and Biomaterials Pole in the municipality of As Pontes de García Rodríguez in A Coruña.

The president reiterated his support to the promoters of the project in the search for support in the distribution of European Next Generation funds, due to the maximum interest of the Galician Government to implement tractor industries that contribute to the consolidation of the business fabric, especially SMEs. In this sense, he insisted that the central government speed up and specify the distribution of funds, not only in this case, but in all the strategic initiatives for Galicia that await that financing.

“We continue to reach out so that the Government, which reserved 100% of the distribution of the funds associated with the industry, has the communities to manage the funds,” he concluded.
