Berlin–Setting the course for sustainable economic development: On behalf of the city of Chemnitz, IAV and its partners have developed a hydrogen strategy for cross-sector use in the region around the Saxon city.

“Our goal is to establish the Chemnitz region in the long term as a leading location for research and development of innovative hydrogen technologies with a focus on the production, storage and application of hydrogen,” says Marcus Lassowski, senior consultant in the technology strategy department at IAV -Subsidiary consulting4drive (C4D).

The city of Chemnitz presented the first areas of action of the strategic plan for the development of a hydrogen economy in the “HyExperts Region” in southwest Saxony on Wednesday – at the conclusion of the one-year development project funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV).

Numerous location advantages

In pursuing the goal of intelligently using hydrogen in the mobility, energy and heating sectors and supporting the transformation of the automotive industry, the Chemnitz region benefits from numerous small and medium-sized companies that actively support the change to a sustainable hydrogen economy the concept of IAV, C4D, DBI Group and Localiser RLI GmbH.

“The next step will be the implementation of the short, medium and long-term goals and projects,” says the mayor of the city of Chemnitz, Sven Schulze. “The important thing for this is: commitment, inventiveness, a functioning network and also investments in the public and private sectors.”

With investments of an estimated 72.5 million euros from the federal government alone, the new hydrogen technology center (HIC) offers suppliers and especially the many Smaller companies in the region will provide an efficient development environment for H 2 technologies and will attract further companies and specialists to the region, according to the four partners. Construction and commissioning of the HIC are planned by 2028 at the latest.

High importance for the region

The importance of the H2 technology for the Chemnitz region is enormous. For example, the Free State of Saxony and Vitesco Technologies are investing around 11 million euros in H 2 testing infrastructures, and the HIC is also supported by pioneering associations from science and industry.

As part of the new hydrogen strategy, IAV provides recommendations on where and in what quantities hydrogen should be produced or purchased, how it should be transported and for what purposes. The details are expected to be published by the National Organization for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology NOW GmbH in a final report in October.
