The Hydrogen Powered Kawasak

It is a fact that the future strategy of brands does not solely rely on gasoline. While Honda has already announced its focus on electric vehicles, Kawasaki has taken the path of hydrogen. We saw this in 2022 with their upcoming hydrogen engine and the model showcased at EICMA.

However, the model we saw slightly differs from the one the Japanese have just unveiled in a meeting to discuss plans for 2030. Kawasaki is introducing, for the first time in the world, a hydrogen-powered motorcycle based on the H2 SX that will hit the streets.

The hydrogen-powered Kawasaki is no longer a ‘concept’: it will hit the streets in 2024.

The Hydrogen Powered Kawasaki Is ReaL

The hydrogen-powered motorcycle is no longer a concept. It is the first time that the hydrogen-powered motorcycle, created based on the H2 SX, is revealed as the final version that will hit the streets for initial tests in early 2024.

It closely resembles the first motorcycle showcased by Akashi in videos and images at the Milan fair in 2022. Now, the model is a reality—the final version—with several changes compared to the initial unveiling. As we see it, it is ready to be ridden and has ceased to be a mere prototype.

The most noticeable change is observed in the rear cases or boxes. They are nothing like the initial ones; instead, they are much larger and eye-catching. They function as hydrogen tanks installed on both sides, with an inlet in between for refueling.

The engine is direct-injection and is equipped with a supercharger. It is based on the 998 cc inline-four of the Ninja H2, but has been modified to include direct hydrogen injection, which is installed directly under the throttle valve. The blue component is the supercharging turbine.

We will still have to wait to see it in dealerships. According to Kawasaki, the goal is to start marketing hydrogen-powered motorcycles from 2030, and they have mentioned that they will not let internal combustion engine motorcycles die out; instead, the idea is for them to coexist.
