Fuel Cells Works, The Pecem Industry and Port Complex (CIPP) Will Build a 2.4 GW Electrolysis Plant to Produce Hydrogen and Ammonia in Brazil

With Brazilian developers Casa dos Ventos Energias Renovaveis and Comerc Eficiencia, Pecem Industry and Port Complex (CIPP) has signed a pre-contract for an electrolysis plant that can produce up to 2.4 GW of hydrogen and ammonia.

The project, which has been in the works since 2021, is now moving on to the environmental licensing and basic project phase to start its implementation, which will be divided into stages. When at full operating capacity, the project will have a capacity of up to 2.4 GW of electrolysis, producing more than a thousand tons of hydrogen per day, enabling the delivery of 2.2 million tons of green ammonia per year.

The companies Comerc Eficiência and Casa dos Ventos had already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Government of Ceará and another with Complexo do Pecém (CIPP S/A) to ensure their participation in the H2V Hub project in Ceará.

The plant, which will occupy an area of up to 60 hectares in the Ceará ZPE, will avoid the emission of up to 430 thousand tons of CO2 per month, through the generation of Green Hydrogen instead of Gray Hydrogen, which emits 2.4 kg of CO2 for each kilogram of Gray Ammonia produced, thus bringing a significant reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG).

The Secretary for Economic Development and Labor (Sedet), Maia Júnior, highlighted at the ceremony the importance of the return on investments of Casa dos Ventos in the State of Ceará. “Casa dos Ventos is one of the biggest energy investors in Brazil and now it will be green hydrogen. And this return is very significant for us, after a long work by the teams of the Sedet System led by the then governor Camilo Santana”, said Maia Júnior.

“Ceará is located in a region of efficient and abundant energy resources, combined with a strategic position for foreign trade. These factors allow us to export our renewable energy in the form of green energy products in a very competitive manner globally”, says Lucas Araripe, new business director at Casa dos Ventos.

“Green hydrogen has immense potential to be, if not the main, then one of the main agents of the global energy transition towards net zero. Here in Brazil, with the abundance of energy sources such as solar and wind, this scenario is extremely favorable to place us as one of the biggest players in the world. And, therefore, it is a great pleasure to have Comerc Eficiência at the forefront of an innovative project that takes another step towards a sustainable economy, opening up new possibilities for generating wealth for the country and creating thousands of jobs”, he says. Marcel Haratz, president of Comerc Eficiência.

“We are very pleased with the signing of this pre-contract signed with Casa do Ventos e Comerc. It is the recognition of important companies in the market. That is, more players join this strategic energy transition project that we have been developing here in Ceará since the beginning of last year. The Ceará and Pecém Green Hydrogen Hub is already a reality”, celebrates Danilo Serpa, president of Complexo do Pecém (CIPP S/A).

In September, AES Brasil Energia SA signed a pre-contract for a project to construct a plant that could produce up to 2 GW of hydrogen and 800,000 tons of ammonia at the Pecem port complex.
