Fuel Cells Works, Thursday Throwback Story: Element 2 and Electra Commercial Vehicles Agree Exclusive Working Partnership on Hydrogen

Element 2, the UK’s leading hydrogen refuelling business, has today signed an exclusive partnership agreement with zero-emission vehicle provider Electra Commercial Vehicles (“Electra”), to provide a supply of hydrogen gas and the associated refuelling infrastructure to Electra and its Fuel Cell vehicle customers.

In addition to offering a full turnkey solution for hydrogen supply, Element 2 will also provide technical and logistical support to both Electra, and its current and prospective clients, as they plan and/or scope out hydrogen refuelling solutions. While the letter of intent (“LOI”) covers Electra’s operations in the UK and Ireland initially, it may be extended to other geographic regions as and when Electra expands in the future.

Tim Harper, Chief Executive Officer, Element 2, said: “Today’s partnership announcement marks an important step towards decarbonising the UK’s road transport with hydrogen, as we blend our supply and refuelling expertise with Electra’s market-leading vehicles. Our collaboration is designed to grow and develop the British hydrogen market further and faster, and we firmly believe that only by working together can we reach those vital net-zero targets.”

Brendan Bilton, Chief Technology Officer, Element 2, added: “Establishing long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with vehicle manufacturers is a critical part of our business model; therefore, we are delighted to be partnering with such a marque firm as Electra. We’re looking forward to working together to build a flourishing hydrogen economy in the UK and Ireland, to realise our vision of making diesel history.”

Sid Sadique, Chairman, Electra Commercial Vehicles, added: “The strategic partnership with Element 2 enables Electra to supply clean hydrogen to any site in the UK, removing barriers to entry and helping our clients transition to zero-emission Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles. We are excited to partner with Element 2. Together, we are the first in the UK to deliver a complete and holistic hydrogen transport solution.”

In March of this year, Element 2 completed the UK’s first hydrogen refuelling of a Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) – the first of its kind in the UK – built by Electra. Until that time, only waste collection vehicles, cars and buses had been refuelled with hydrogen.

Element 2 is building the UK’s first network of hydrogen refuelling stations to enable the rapid transition of heavy road vehicles and municipal fleets to a zero-carbon, zero-emissions future.

Element 2 is investing in prime locations across the UK and Ireland, and its network of safe, high-quality hydrogen refuelling stations will cover the entire country by 2027, using green hydrogen from local and national producers to create the cornerstone for the decarbonisation of heavy transport.
