Fuel Cells Works, Turkey Launches First Hydrogen Valley, Begins Pilot Green Hydrogen Production

Turkey’s inaugural hydrogen valley project has commenced pilot production of green hydrogen, sourced from renewable resources at the Enerjisa Production Bandirma Energy Base.

The “South Marmara Hydrogen Shore – HYSouthMarmara” was launched with the collaboration of Enerjisa Ãœretim and 16 domestic and international stakeholders, receiving €8 million from the European Commission. The project will produce and distribute green hydrogen at the base. Project partners include Güney Marmara Kalkınma Ajansı” (South Marmara Development Agency), Sabancı University, ÅžiÅŸecam, Eti Maden, Turkish-German University, Linde Gaz AÅž, Bandırma Onyedi Eylül University, Hydrogen Peroxide AÅž, Universite Mohammed Vi Polytechnique, Alma Mater Studiorum-Universita Di Bologna, Software AG (SAG), PwC Sworn In Financial Consultancy Inc., TENMAK, and TUBITAK.

Green hydrogen will be utilized across various industries, such as chemistry, ceramics, and glass, followed by iron, steel, petrochemical, energy, and transportation. The project aims to produce an average of 500 tons of green hydrogen annually by 2025. Energy derived from the sea will be employed to produce emission-free hydrogen, classified as green hydrogen. Additionally, the project will eliminate carbon emissions by using hydrogen for generator cooling.

With the implementation of the hydrogen valley project, green hydrogen production will be used across multiple sectors, including energy, transportation, and petrochemicals. The project seeks to incorporate green hydrogen in products such as ammonia and methanol, currently imported by Turkey. Feasibility studies are underway in this direction, and future investments in “green methanol” and “green ammonia” production will be considered.
