Fuel Cells Works, Turkey's Largest Domestic Green Hydrogen Facility Gets the Green Light

The South Marmara Development Agency (GMKA), Eti Maden, and Enerjisa Üretim have jointly financed the “South Marmara Hydrogen Coast Platform” Guided Project.

Following an 8-million-euro grant from the Horizon European Framework Program, the “South Marmara Hydrogen Coast” Valley Project will bolster the region’s hydrogen economy.

The project, submitted by Eti Maden Operations General Directorate and involving Enerjisa Enerji Üretim A.Ş., Offshore Wind Energy Association, Bandırma Onyedi Eylül University, and Sabancı University, plans to construct Turkey’s largest green hydrogen plant at the Bandırma Energy Base. After this pilot, Turkey’s first MW-scale electrolyzer will be developed.

The 24-month project will yield two essential feasibility studies. The “South Marmara Green Industrial Zone” feasibility study on the Bandırma-Biga route will promote clean and planned sector growth.

South Marmara, aspiring to be Turkey’s education hub, embraced the “Green Sea” after the Renewable Youth Energy (Re-YOU Operation) using IPA funds and Renewable Energy Training Centers at Balıkesir University and Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University. The “Industry R&D Test and Training Center” will help the region specialize in offshore renewable power plants and hydrogen, with coordination by the Offshore Wind Energy Association, Bandırma Onyedi Eylül University, and TÜBİTAK MAM.

The “South Marmara Hydrogen Coast Platform” project, with the highest co-financing rate among guided initiatives supported by Development Agencies, will serve as a model for Turkey’s first renewable energy park, the Bandırma Energy Base, through industrial-scale applications. Larger studies are anticipated, marking another crucial step in Turkey’s journey toward its first hydrogen production and distribution center. The “South Marmara Hydrogen Coast Platform” is a key industry project for achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2053.
