HyHome showcases hydrogen-compatible appliances, representing a potential transition from natural gas to hydrogen, a cleaner energy option. The home demonstrates how familiar gas appliances can run entirely on hydrogen, presenting a new way to minimize emissions.

AGIG’s CEO, Craig de Laine, expressed the transformative nature of this development: “We’ve known of the potential for hydrogen to be part of the renewable energy solution for industry and transport, but to demonstrate that gas appliances in the home can also run entirely on hydrogen is a game changer.”

“It provides ongoing choice for households, and for the energy transition as it represents an additional source of clean energy to displace emissions and meet our net zero targets.”

HyHome features hydrogen-powered hot water systems, cooktops, and heating units, developed in collaboration with Rinnai and Electrolux. AGIG also assures that their current gas network can transport 100% hydrogen to homes in Victoria with minimal added investment.

Hydrogen stands out as a clean, versatile, and abundant energy source, and HyHome is a testament to its potential. The Rinnai hydrogen-powered appliances used in the home are a global innovation, producing zero carbon emissions when powered by renewable hydrogen. This offers an ecologically responsible alternative to traditional gas and electric appliances.

Rinnai Australia Managing Director, Lucas Van Raay, captured the enthusiasm surrounding the project: “HyHome is an exciting milestone in Australia’s shift to a renewable energy future. Hydrogen is a clean, versatile and abundant energy source that can revolutionise the way Australians power their homes and businesses. The Rinnai hydrogen powered appliances used for heating and hot water in the HyHome are a world first, producing zero carbon emissions when powered by renewable hydrogen and offering a sustainable alternative to traditional gas and electric appliances.”

“With hydrogen, Australian consumers can continue to enjoy the legendary comfort, convenience, efficiency and reliability of Rinnai gas heating and hot water, as they have for more than 50 years, whilst reducing their carbon footprint. We are very excited to be working with AGIG on the hydrogen transition.”

The development of HyHome aligns with AGIG’s commitment to create a hydrogen industry in Australia, delivering renewable gas safely and reliably. It also falls in line with AGIG’s vision to provide 100% carbon-free gas by 2050, with at least 10% renewable gas blends by 2030.

Additionally, details of Rinnai’s Hydrogen Hot Water units were highlighted, including a gas input rating of 70MJ/h and hot water capacity, with future plans to scale up the system as technology adoption increases.

This partnership between Rinnai and AGIG signifies a vital step in Australia’s quest for renewable energy, making hydrogen an integral component of the country’s future energy landscape.
