Marubeni and PERU LNG have embarked on an innovative collaboration, announcing a joint study agreement to kickstart a Pre-FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) study for a project centered on the production of e-methane from green hydrogen and carbon dioxide (CO2) in Peru.

This pioneering project aligns with global sustainability goals, specifically targeting the gas decarbonization realm.

E-methane, mirroring the composition of natural gas, possesses immense potential to leverage existing infrastructure and facilities, such as natural gas pipelines. This compatibility makes e-methane a crucial element in the quest for gas decarbonization. Significantly, the Japanese government’s 6th Strategic Energy Plan, revealed in October 2021, lays out ambitious targets for e-methane integration into existing infrastructure, aiming for 1% by 2030 and 90% by 2050, to foster the transition to carbon-neutral gas.

The collaboration between Marubeni, PERU LNG, and Osaka Gas extends back to an initial study conducted since July 2022. The study explored the prospects of procuring renewable energy and CO2 to produce approximately 60,000 tpy of e-methane. Remarkably, the study affirmed that Peru’s abundant renewable energy sources, coupled with PERU LNG’s liquefaction terminal capacity, could facilitate the production of e-methane at a competitive rate.

The Pre-FEED phase is poised to delve into comprehensive discussions on vital aspects such as the procurement conditions for renewable energy and raw materials (including CO2), plant construction specifications, economic evaluations, and intricate feasibility studies. Following the completion of the Pre-FEED, all parties involved, including Marubeni, Osaka Gas, and PERU LNG, will meticulously assess the outcomes.

The timeline foresees an investment decision by 2025, steering towards the commencement of production and sales of e-methane by 2030.
