The Covid-19 pandemic has had a serious impact on the UK’s economy and the APPG is looking to explore what potential opportunities hydrogen creates in order to contribute towards rebuilding a green economy.
This could involve the creation of highly skilled jobs in the energy sector as well as supporting the UK’s net-zero targets as we emerge from the crisis.
The APPG’s call for evidence will look at what steps need to be taken to ensure that hydrogen is part of the solution to a greener future.
Jacob Young MP, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Hydrogen said:
“I’m pleased to announce that the APPG on Hydrogen is launching an inquiry into the role that the UK’s hydrogen sector can play in driving the UK’s economic recovery. The Covid-19 pandemic has significant implications for the UK economy and it’s important that we begin looking at how we grow beyond this crisis.
“I believe hydrogen has a key role in shaping our future economy to meet our net-zero targets and support the creation of high-skilled jobs. As an APPG, we want to hear from organisations about how they are contributing to a greener future and what steps need to be taken to ensure that hydrogen is part of the solution to this. It’s crucial we understand how low-carbon, emerging sectors like hydrogen energy can develop the economy as we emerge from this crisis.
“We are keen to hear from leading businesses, trade associations, energy providers, charities, regulators, local government representatives and many more, to understand what needs to be done to ensure that hydrogen plays its part in supporting the economy and getting the UK back on its feet.”
The APPG is inviting written submissions to inform this inquiry. Submissions should be a maximum of two pages and submitted HERE.
It should focus on but not be limited to:
- Hydrogen’s existing and potential roles in different sectors – heat, transport etc.
- The short-term and long-term approach towards a hydrogen economy – the need for both green and blue hydrogen
- Distribution and storage of hydrogen
- Hydrogen’s potential to support and create growth, employment and upskilling opportunities in the UK
- How hydrogen can help the UK meet its net-zero targets
- What steps should be taken to ensure the UK becomes a world leader in hydrogen technology
The APPG is also requesting case studies, statistics and any practical examples of research or studies undertaken on how hydrogen benefits jobs, skills, the economy and will contribute to net-zero.
