The first installation of a hydrogen-fuelled MHE (Material Handling Equipment) fleet is well underway at Skelmersdale CDC.

This was originally delayed due to Covid-19, however, progress is now being made to ensure an imminent go-live date.

The management teams and colleagues at Skelmersdale have been extremely patient during these times and it will soon all pay off when they have the very first Hydrogen fuelled fleet in both the Asda network and the UK as a whole. Really exciting times ahead for ALS and in particular our colleagues in Skelmersdale.ASDA Logistics Services insert

Skelmersdale will have the very first Hydrogen fuelled fleet in both the Asda network and the UK as a whole.

Labour AND time saving
Colleagues currently change batteries on our fleet manually, which is a slow and labor-intensive task, taking around 10 minutes. Colleagues will now refuel a hydrogen fuel cell instead, as you would in your car, making it safer and more efficient for the colleague. The process from start to finish takes only 90 seconds to complete. All that is required is 3 simple connections to the truck.

Improved lifetime efficiency
The economic lifetime of the truck using hydrogen as its fuel source will be up 1.5-2x as long when compared to lead-acid which we currently use. There is also no loss of power as the fuel cell depletes, unlike before.
