The Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, plans to visit Morocco to explore possibilities for collaboration on green hydrogen. The trip, planned for late June, will involve discussions around the potential for Moroccan green hydrogen to contribute to the Dutch energy transition.

The Netherlands has a goal to become CO2-neutral by 2050, and the country is particularly interested in hydrogen as a means to achieve this. However, the country’s capacity to produce green hydrogen domestically is limited, leading to a need for imports.

Morocco is seen as an ideal partner for green hydrogen production due to its geographic location and vast solar and wind resources. It is estimated that the country has the potential to produce 4% of the world’s green hydrogen by 2030.

The upcoming visit is expected to include talks on a potential hydrogen deal between the two countries, which would see green hydrogen exported from Morocco to the Netherlands. This could greatly contribute to the Dutch energy transition and help the country meet its carbon neutrality goals.

Rutte’s visit follows a series of high-level meetings and exchanges between Morocco and European countries aimed at advancing the green hydrogen sector. Morocco has been working to position itself as a leader in the production and export of green hydrogen and has already signed agreements with Germany and France in this regard.
