Fuel Cells Works, FlagshipONE Gets Construction for Sweden's First Large-Scale Plant for Green Electric Fuel

FlagshipONE AB, which is owned by Liquid Wind and Ørsted together, has received construction for Sweden’s first large-scale plant for green electric fuel. The building judgment was handed down by the Land and Environmental Court at Umeå District Court nine months after the environmental permit application was submitted.

Claes Fredriksson, Liquid Winds CEO and founder, comments:

“This is an important milestone for FlagshipONE and for our ambition to deliver green electric fuel to the shipping industry in the near future.”

Anders Nordstrøm, chief operating officer of Ørsted’s hydrogen and Power-to-X operations, says:

“We are very pleased with this milestone for the project, which will soon be able to supply green fuel on a large scale and promote the phasing out of fossil fuels in shipping as well as other sectors.”

FlagshipONE will annually deliver 50,000 tonnes of renewable and fossil-free fuel primarily to the shipping industry

FlagshipONE will be connected to Övik Energi’s CHP plant Hörneborgsverket in Örnsköldsvik in northeastern Sweden. When the plant is up and running, it will produce 50,000 tonnes of electric fuel. The plant will recycle carbon dioxide and combine it with green hydrogen, produced with renewable electricity and water, to produce the green electro-fuel electromethanol.

The following strategic partners will contribute to the design and construction of FlagshipONE: Carbon Clean, Siemens Energy, Topsoe and co-owner Ørsted.

Liquid Wind and Ørsted have entered into an agreement which means that Ørsted has acquired a 45% ownership interest in FlagshipONE. Ørsted is the world’s leading developer in renewable energy and is developing a global portfolio of projects in renewable hydrogen and green fuels.
