Fortescue Future Industries Pty Ltd (FFI) and the State of Ceará, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to assess the opportunity to develop hydrogen-based green industrial projects in Brazil.

The MOU will allow for FFI and the State of Ceará to conduct development studies into the feasibility of installing a renewable green hydrogen plant in the State of Ceará. It will also enable collaboration with local universities to develop research programs to foster hydrogenrelated technologies, with a vision to train and hire local personnel as well as retain services and buy products locally where possible.

FFI Chief Executive Officer Julie Shuttleworth AM said, “At FFI, our vision is to make renewable green hydrogen the most globally traded seaborne energy commodity in the world.

“We want to drive the renewable green energy and product industry by harnessing the world’s renewable energy resources to produce green electricity, green hydrogen, green ammonia and other green industrial products.

“I am pleased to announce FFI has signed this MOU with the State of Ceará. This is an exciting opportunity to explore potential establishment of new and future large-scale green industries, that will drive growth and create many jobs for the Brazilian economy,” Ms Shuttleworth said.

The availability of green hydrogen and renewable power in the State of Ceará is expected to drive further sustainable industrialisation.

FFI President Latin America, Agustin Pichot said, “The State of Ceará has significant renewable energy potential, attractive port infrastructure and is a strategic location.

“This agreement will allow FFI to work with the State of Ceará to assess the opportunity to develop a green hydrogen production project, leading Brazil’s energy transition towards decarbonisation,” Mr Pichot said.

Governor for the State of Ceará, Camilo Santana said, “This means moving the state’s economy and generating jobs for the people of Ceará. Not to mention the contribution to the decarbonisation of the world,” the Governor said.
