frontier energy receives key green certification for its bristol springs green hydrogen project

Frontier Energy Limited has announced a significant accomplishment: the Smart Energy Council has completed pre-certification for the Zero Carbon Certification Scheme at the company’s Bristol Springs Renewable Energy Project.

This serves as a critical validation point, ensuring all stakeholders – including shareholders, financiers, and offtakers – that the production process will yield green hydrogen or zero-carbon hydrogen.

This pre-certification positions Bristol Springs Project among only three hydrogen projects in Australia that have achieved this status. The pre-certification process, which examined all the assumptions of the Company’s recent Definitive Feasibility Study, validates that the project will produce zero-carbon renewable hydrogen.

The pre-certification aligns with the Federal Government’s recent announcement of a $38.2 million commitment to implement the Guarantee of Origin (GO) Certificate scheme to track and verify emissions linked to hydrogen and other low-emission products. It provides an evaluation of all direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production and storage of renewable hydrogen, excluding emissions related to the construction material of the facility.

Sam Lee Mohan, Managing Director of Frontier Energy, stated that receiving zero carbon pre-certification is vital for offtakers and the construction financing for the project. This independent pre-certification of the origin and source of green hydrogen boosts confidence in stakeholders and shareholders that the hydrogen produced at the project is confirmed as 100% clean and derived from 100% renewable energy.

Joanna Kay, General Manager of Zero Carbon Hydrogen Australia, commented: “The certification of Frontier Energy Bristol Spring project is a tremendous milestone. This is an industry driven certification scheme that gives confidence to all stakeholders, including shareholders, financiers and offtakers alike that Frontier Energy will produce renewable hydrogen at the Bristol Springs Project. Leadership from industry to secure early certification ensures that we are driving and building a strong renewable hydrogen economy here in Australia. The Zero Carbon Certification Scheme is demonstrating global leadership and ensuring the quality production of renewable hydrogen. Congratulations Frontier Energy.”

Point Advisory, an ERM Group company, engaged by the Smart Energy Council on behalf of Frontier, performed a limited assurance validation engagement of the Project (“Validation”). The pre-certification audit assesses any direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production and storage of the renewable hydrogen at the Project’s facilities, excluding emissions related to the construction material of the facility.

The Zero Carbon Certification Scheme was launched by Zero Carbon Hydrogen Australia, a division of the Smart Energy Council, in December 2020. The Western Australian Government is a founding partner of the Scheme which now has 15 Founding Partners and international advisors.
