Atlanta, GA, October 2018 — The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has preliminarily awarded $5,831,866 million dollars to the Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE) for Next Generation Fuel Cell Delivery Van Deployment.  The Next Generation Fuel Cell Delivery Van Deployment Project will develop, validate, and deploy four fuel cell hybrid electric delivery vans with an eye toward commercialization of the technology.  Linamar will be the primary integrator of the vehicle utilizing its existing hybrid powertrain configuration with a next generation eAxle, Ballard Power Systems will supply the fuel cell, and the completed vans will be operated in parcel delivery service by UPS out of its Customer Center in Ontario, CA.

The Next Generation Fuel Cell Delivery Van Deployment Project is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide initiative that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy and improving public health and the environment — particularly in disadvantaged communities

Funding through the Zero and Near-Zero Emission Freight Facilities (ZANZEFF) Program allows project stakeholders to:

  • purchase larger quantities of advanced technology vehicle components and take advantage of supply chain benefits and economies-of-scale cost reductions
  • respond to the growing number of fleet operators who desire zero-emission electric-drive vehicles with extended range and operation time
  • reduce California diesel consumption by almost 15,000 gallons each year – the annual reduction will grow to 8.8 million gallons even if only 1% of CA Class 3-8 urban work trucks adopt this technology
  • provide zero-emission vehicle options for delivery routes in targeted deployment zones, like disadvantaged communities

“We would like to express our gratitude to CARB for this exciting opportunity to continue to transform the parcel-delivery market into a zero-emission space,” said Dan Raudebaugh, Executive Director of CTE
