Strengthening competence in the “green gas” market segment

Arcanum Energy Systems GmbH & Co KG (Arcanum), based in Unna, Westphalia, has been part of the NEUMAN & ESSER GROUP (NEA) group of companies since April 30, 2020.

As a result of the merger, both medium-sized companies will bundle their competencies in order to master the entire process chain from the biogas plant, via biogas processing to grid feed-in, including further processing into green hydrogen, as a solution provider in the future.

As a leading service provider and consultant, Arcanum offers energy supply companies, farmers, and municipalities individual strategies and business models in the fields of renewable energies. The repertoire includes, among other things, the search for a location and technology advice, but also the approval, implementation, and commissioning of complete biogas and, above all, biogas processing and feed-in systems along their value chain. The company also manages so-called biogas pools, an amalgamation of several municipal utilities and biogas plants in order to use biomethane in an environmentally friendly way in combined heat and power plants for the production of electricity and heat.

“ Arcanum’s know-how is the perfect addition to our existing portfolio of piston compressor systems for the compression of process gases, technical gases, and natural gas. Feeding biomethane into the natural gas network is one of the numerous “green” applications of our compressor solutions, ” says Alexander Peters, managing partner of the NEA GROUP“Another application is the extraction of green hydrogen from electrolysis or steam reforming of biomethane, which finds its way to customers almost exclusively through compression and can thus implement sector coupling as part of the energy transition – a terrain in which we as hydrogen -Experience experts very well, “ he continues.

“Agile. Solution. Experts define our vision and guides us in the strategic direction of positioning the NEA GROUP as a solution provider through product diversification. The acquisition of companies like Arcanum creates numerous new opportunities for our business areas, ” adds his sister Stefanie Peters. This is how the siblings see that in the future the international NEA plant engineering companies will also take over the construction of gas processing plants, while the advisory sales will remain with Arcanum.

But the pioneers in the green gas market want more. “We are banking on the internationalization of our biogas business and on new market trends such as power-to-gas and bio LNG, ie the economical use of fuels based on biogenic waste. We were looking for a strategic partner for this, ” said Dr. Helmut Kern, founder and managing director of Arcanum, who will continue to run the business together with his almost 40-strong team after the transition.

With the recent 50% participation in the start-up “Alternative Energy Driven Solutions (AEDS)” by the NEA GROUP together with PEM Motion and its main partner Prof. Achim Kampker in Aachen, a know-how cluster will emerge with Arcanum . One is thinking about the methodology of municipal approval procedures and the development of locations that AEDS needs for the last mile when developing mobility concepts based on a CO 2 -neutral charging and supply infrastructure. A self-sufficient and “green” hydrogen solution from the source, via the necessary filling station infrastructure, the fuel cell to the vehicle axle also plays a decisive role here.

By taking over the business activities of ARCANUM Energy Systems GmbH & Co. KG, there are no changes in the structure and direction of ARCANUM Energy Solutions GmbH (AESo) and other companies in the group. AESo will continue to expand its activities in the areas of climate protection and green energy, in particular trading and detection systems.
