Expanding Hydrogen Infrastructure in Germany
Lusatia is already one of nine German hydrogen model regions. In the future, H2 can become a powerful engine of development in structural change.

This is confirmed by an analysis carried out on behalf of the Lausitz economic region as part of the “Future workshop Lausitz” project. Accordingly, the hydrogen economy offers the potential to open up new sectors of the economy and generate future-proof jobs.

Heiko Jahn, Managing Director of the economic region Lausitz GmbH: “This analysis encourages. The decision to phase out coal-based power generation is not the end of the Lausitz energy region, but can be the beginning of a new era. ”Lausitz is already on the way to this future technology. The study thus points out that there are a large number of actors and projects that are dedicated to this topic. These include the reference power plant and the Lausitz real laboratory in Schwarze Pumpe as well as the Siemens Görlitz innovation campus with a planned hydrogen lab and H2 research.

“We have the chance to get to the top through technological change,” says Heiko Jahn of the study. The three engines in development are therefore the production of H2 technologies, decentralized energy generation with hydrogen, and the development of H2 mobility. In order to build the future hydrogen economy in Lusatia, the authors of the study recommend the next steps as a Lausitzer H2 network, a H2 research factory and centers for professional and academic specialist training in the field of hydrogen.

The study was carried out by scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology (IWU) and the Center for Energy Technology Brandenburg eV (CEBra). Ideally, they will see a rapid increase in the hydrogen economy from 2030 in a “roadmap”: According to this model, public transport has used a large number of H2-powered vehicles in ten years. An almost nationwide network of petrol stations is formed. By 2040, H2 storage power plants had been built at the Lusatian power plant locations. At the same time, a large number of specific technologies and systems are manufactured and used by the H2 research factory and in H2 commercial areas. By 2050, a national pipeline network will have been built based on the required amounts of hydrogen.

The complete study is available on the Internet at the following address: (German Only) https://zw-lausitz.de/fileadmin/user_upload/01-content/03-zukunftswerkstatt/02downloads/studie-wasserstoffwirtschaft-in-der-lausitz.pdf

The analysis of the hydrogen economy becomes an important part of the “Lausitz 2050” development strategy. This strategy is based on a large number of scientific studies carried out on behalf of the future workshop in Lausitz. In addition, the people of Lusatia were asked intensively how they would like their home region to look in the future. This extensive collection of materials and the existing regional and municipal guidelines, concepts and position papers will be condensed into the “Development Strategy Lausitz 2050” by the end of 2020.
