Fuel Cells Works, Van Moer Logistics and Delhaize Put CMB.TECH's First Bi-Fuel Hydrogen Truck Into Service

The hydrogen bi-fuel truck will be used on a trial basis from November 2021 to deliver to Delhaize supermarkets. The truck has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80%. After the 12-month test phase, it will be determined how the technology developed by CMB.TECH can be deployed in Van Moer Logistics’ fleet of 500 trucks.

On June 3, 2021, CMB.TECH presented its multimodal hydrogen filling station in Antwerp and the international developer of hydrogen solutions also presented its prototype of a hydrogen truck. Thanks to its bi-fuel technology, the truck has several advantages over other hydrogen trucks. The truck has a greater range, is less expensive to buy and does not lose cargo space in the trailer.

From November, the truck will join the transport fleet of Van Moer Logistics, the Antwerp-based logistics service provider with a total fleet of 500 trucks. CMB.TECH is satisfied to have found a suitable partner to be the first to test the hydrogen truck in Europe. “We were looking for a reliable and stable partner, ready to go through the testing phase of our hydrogen truck with us,” said Alexander Saverys, CEO of CMB.TECH. Van Moer Logistics shares our vision of reducing emissions from the transportation sector through financially viable and reliable technologies. The testing of this first CMB.TECH hydrogen truck is a first step towards rapid scale-up and the deployment of

“The bi-fuel truck will be used for the first time for transport between Delhaize’s distribution center in Zellik and our supermarkets in the Antwerp area. We are therefore proud to be able to collaborate with two strong Belgian companies such as Van Moer Logistics and CMB.TECH for more sustainable transport Only together can we build a sustainable future for future generations, “said Dieter De Waegeneer, Executive Vice President of Operations at Delhaize.

How does it work?

The dual fuel hydrogen truck can add hydrogen as fuel in its converted diesel engine to consume less diesel and produce less CO2. If necessary, the engine can also run entirely on diesel. Besides CO2, NOX emissions are also reduced by up to -70%, but taking into account the very ecological aftertreatment of the new diesel engines, this also translates into a reduction in AdBlue consumption. Using the motor

existing diesel and drivetrain, we can reduce the capital cost of this truck to a third of that of a zero-emission alternative.

With a full hydrogen tank, the truck has a range of 500 km and, if necessary, can continue to run on diesel for an additional 3,000 km.

Jo Van Moer, Founder and CEO of Van Moer Logistics: “The dual fuel functionality is what makes this truck so interesting. The goal is to run 100% on hydrogen, but in everyday life on the road we have to take into account unpredictable factors such as traffic jams and waiting hours. Thanks to the diesel reserve, we do not have to worry about the truck running out of fuel in the middle of its journey. technology to the new trucks we buy today, we can continue to operate in the usual way, but allow the scaling of hydrogen refueling stations and associated infrastructure. ”
